Slaves To Sin

John 8:33-38
They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?" Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it for ever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. I know you are Abraham's descendants. Yet you are ready to kill me, because you have no room for my word. I am telling you what I have seen in the Father's presence, and you do what you have heard from your father." (NIV)

Jesus had just told the religious people that if they obeyed His teaching, they would know the truth and be set free. Their response was that they were not slaves of anyone, so why would they want to be free!? But they were enslaved: physically and politically, the whole nation was dominated by the Roman Empire; but worse, they were slaves to sin. Like every human being they were sinners, incapable of escaping the desire to be righteous in their own eyes. They did not want to submit to the God they professed to worship, and proved it by rejecting Jesus and the word of God which He spoke.

The proof that they were self-justifying, egocentric people motivated by evil was that they were ready to kill Him. Despite their religion, they did not honour God as their Father. Instead, Jesus was hinting that their hearts had been taken captive by Satan (John 8:44) who had no good long term future for them. But those who followed Jesus, by obeying Him, would be led to His Father's home for eternity. So Jesus urged them again to allow Him to set them free from their sins. That was His purpose in coming to earth, and had been fully discussed with Father God in heaven before He came.

Satan certainly offers security, but he can never fulfil his promises. He offers freedom but traps people by his lies. Jesus came to release people from the bondage of Satan's lies and their ungodly reaction leading to sin. No human being can escape that trap except through Jesus. That is the wonderful message we can, and must, bring to a hurting world which is suffering the consequences of sin. Such people need the gospel truth to show them how to be saved. Why not show them www.crosscheck.org.uk which has helped many people to discover how to find freedom in Christ? Your friends and colleagues do not have to be held captive any longer!

Prayer
Loving Lord. Thank You for sending Jesus to be my Saviour. I am grateful that I do not have to be controlled by evil lies any longer. But I am sorry when I have been trapped into being silent about Jesus and depriving those I know and love from hearing the gospel. Please help me to share what I know about my Saviour. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
